Hojicha

What is it?

Hojicha (ほうじ茶) 🍵 is a Japanese roasted green tea. Unlike matcha, which is a finely ground green tea powder, hojicha is made by roasting green tea leaves and stems at high temperatures.

The roasting process changes the tea from green to a reddish-brown color and gives it a distinctive toasty, nutty, slightly caramel-like aroma and flavor, with much less of the grassy taste associated with typical green tea.

What does hojicha contain?

  • 🌿 Tea antioxidants — contains naturally occurring polyphenols, although roasting changes their levels compared with unroasted green tea.
  • ☕ Caffeine — hojicha generally contains caffeine, though brewed hojicha is often relatively low in caffeine compared with many other teas.
  • 🌰 Roasted aroma and flavor — one of hojicha's main attractions is its smooth, warm, toasted character.
  • 🍃 Naturally unsweetened — pure hojicha contains no added sugar.

Product Benefits

  • 🛡️ Contains antioxidants - hojicha provides tea polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds, although roasting changes the antioxidant profile compared with unroasted green tea.
  • ☕ Usually lower in caffeine - traditionally brewed hojicha is often relatively low in caffeine, making it appealing to people who want a gentler tea option.
  • 💧 Supports hydration - unsweetened hojicha contributes to your daily fluid intake.
  • 🦷 Sugar-free when consumed plain - pure brewed hojicha contains virtually no sugar, making it a good alternative to sugary beverages.
  • 🍃 Contains beneficial tea compounds - as a green-tea product, hojicha retains naturally occurring plant compounds despite undergoing roasting.
